SUMMERTIME
2011 – 2016
The sun makes its appearance behind the horizon line. The frontline buildings begin to turn orange and a battle is foreshadowed in the sand. An ordinary day in any tourist destination on the Levante Spanish coast.
The taste of salt water, sticky skin mixed with sweat and sunscreen, sand castles and colored umbrellas are part of my childhood memories and the idea of happiness in my family album. Years later, the summer sun blinds me and makes me squint reinterpreting those spaces destined for mass tourism.

El sol hace su aparición detrás de la línea del horizonte. Los edificios de primera línea comienzan a teñirse de naranja y en la arena se presagia una batalla. Un día cualquiera en un destino turístico cualquiera de la costa levantina española.
El sabor del agua salada, la piel pegajosa mezcla de sudor y protector solar, los castillos de arena y las sombrillas de colores forman parte de mis recuerdos de infancia y de la idea de felicidad de mi álbum familiar. Años después el sol del verano me ciega y me hace entrecerrar los ojos reinterpretando esos espacios destinados al turismo de masas.

Summer is happiness, and happiness is a strange thing that only happens in the past: it is a projection on a mathematically nonexistent point where what we long to have intersects with what we think we have lost. Therefore, returning to summer is impossible.
Nevertheless, each year summer insists on coming back. It settles in and displays its deceptive decorations, invites us to close our eyes and try to expe- rience the moment of weightlessness where the temperature is just right, the breeze exact, the effort is minimal, and the body rolls down a gentle slope in neutral. One can abandon oneself, let the heat melt the mind and put it in a perfect state to relive the lost happiness. On reaching this state however, things do start to happen, but they never have the expected reconnection with the happiness from our past.
This was the summer; it was not on the beach, it was in the eyes of the person that we were in the past and cannot be again. An elusive and irretrievable dream lived just a few meters away from us by other future grown-up children.

El verano es la felicidad, y la felicidad es una cosa extraña que sólo sucede en el pasado: una proyección sobre el punto matemáticamente inexistente donde intersecta lo que un día anhelamos tener con lo que ahora creemos haber perdido. Por tanto, volver al verano es imposible.
Sin embargo, cada año el verano insiste en volver a nosotros, se instala y despliega su engañoso decorado invitándonos a cerrar los ojos e intentar experimentar el momento de ingravidez en que la temperatura es óptima, la brisa exacta, el esfuerzo mínimo, el organismo rueda solo, en punto muerto por una suave pendiente hacia abajo, y uno puede abandonarse, dejar que el calor licúe el cerebro y lo coloque en el estado propicio para revivir esa felicidad perdida. Alcanzado ese estado, en efecto, empiezan a pasar cosas, pero las cosas que pasan nunca son esa esperada reconexión con la felicidad del pasado.
Esto era el verano; no estaba en la playa, sino en los ojos de alguien que fuimos antes y ya no podemos ser. Un sueño escurridizo e irrecuperable que, apenas unos metros más allá, viven otros futuros antiguos niños.
